Article: The strong arm of the law Lombard police department's world- champion weight lifter prefers to fight crime with words.(Special Section)

Byline: David Ferrara Daily Herald Staff Writer

If you drive through Lombard late at night and are pulled over by officer John Latronica, it would be wise not to get snippy.

He could bench press you and two of your friends in the car.

But Latronica probably wouldn't use his strength against you unless absolutely necessary, for he prefers to alleviate problems with words.

"John is very controlled, even-tempered," said fellow officer Jeff Virene.

Sure, but his brute presence helps.

As Virene says, Latronica has "massive shoulders. He's solid. He's like a rock. He doesn't budge if you push him."
