Mar. 22--CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa--Alliant Energy is proposing to build Iowa's first new base-load electric power plant in nearly two decades.
Alliant wants to add 1,200 megawatts of generating capacity, enough to power 300,000 homes, said Eliot Protsch, president of the company's IES Utilities subsidiary.
Alliant's plan comes amid blackouts in California and predictions of power shortages elsewhere in the United States during the high-demand summer months. Iowa lawmakers are now crafting legislation intended to reduce obstacles to the construction of new power ...
