It hasn't been easy to transpose an American classic to television. But when the public sees the new ABC version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's ''South Pacific'' Monday night at 8, they're going to love it.
At least, that's what Glenn Close and other key players say.
The problem with the immortal musical is that it IS a classic and everyone is worried about compromising it.
The show has been changed, they admit.
