Hikers, campers, hunters and fishermen should be aware that a long-held saying - there are no poisonous snakes in Southwestern Ohio counties - is untrue.
However, there is no need to panic, said Doug Wynn, a herpetologist who does contract work for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
''There are things people should know,'' said Wynn. ''There have been no snakebite fatalities in Ohio since 1947. There are only three species of (venomous) snakes in Ohio, and yes, snakes are more afraid of man than man is of snakes.''
