Dreams of independence for Metropolitan State College of Denver were dashed Wednesday by the House Education Committee.
The panel voted 6 to 5 to defeat a bill by Rep. Nolbert Chavez, D-Denver, that would have severed Metro from the four-campus state college system.
Supporters of the measure had said it would give Metro, an urban commuter campus, a higher profile and possibly more funding. Critics said the plan would have left Mesa, Adams and Western state colleges dangling without a governing board and with uncertain funding.
