It's OK with us if the state legislature decides to eliminate the faith-healing exemption in the statute dealing with child abuse. But no one should pretend that removing the exemption will stop parents from withholding medical treatment for religious reasons. If there's reason to change the law, it's because it seems to have become a distraction from the very serious issue of when parents who withhold care should be prosecuted.
As we read the existing exemption, it doesn't remotely shield parents from prosecution when their refusal to provide medical care results in death or permanent injury. To that extent, the current legislative debate, with its repeated ...
