As we mourn the death of Dale Earnhardt, you can feel something extraordinary happening, even though you can't quite explain it.
It isn't the outpouring of grief. That's easily understood. Earnhardt was perhaps the greatest in his sport. He died in a crash. And as his many fans mourn, the rest of the nation is drawn to take a closer look.
There's nothing strange about any of that, any more than it's strange that people have tried to turn a stock-car crash into some kind of national morality tale. Tragedy, in today's media world, cannot exist in a vacuum.
But what lies somewhere beyond explanation - certainly beyond ...
