JUPITER, Fla. - The realist in Mike Hargrove wanted to brush off Pat Hentgen's outing yesterday as nothing more than a rough day.
"It's spring training," Hargrove said after his likely ace was pounded for seven runs and 12 hits in six innings in the Baltimore Orioles' 8-1 loss to St. Louis. "It doesn't bother me. It happens."
The competitor in Hentgen wasn't so easy on himself.
"I'm always concerned when you pitch like that," said Hentgen, more upset with himself than anyone. "Guys saying I'm just trying to get my work in, that's bull. I'm out there trying to pitch well. That's my work, trying to get people out. I just did a poor job ...
