Too much science fiction has either the imagination of a pulp western or the finesse of a lunchtime soap. Occasionally, however, a book comes along that fully exploits the visionary possibilities of the genre.
Such a book was Arthur C Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey which, in the tradition of all the best science fiction, explored universal, existential themes and offered us glimpses of our possible future.
