In general, the reliability and validity of self-report data appear to be good, although more methodological work is needed (Sonenstein, Ku, & Pleck, 1997). The misreporting of sexual activity that does occur usually is not random, having been linked to demographic characteristics of respondents such as age or sex (Brener, Collins, Kann, Warren, & Williams, 1995; Newcomer & Udry, 1988; Siegel, Aten, & Roghmann, 1998). Problematic reporting may also vary by type of sexual behavior, depending on its salience or sensitivity (Catania et al., 1996; Petersen & Catania, 1997).
