In a multicenter case-control study of 750 patients with vascular disease of the coronary, cerebral, or peripheral vessels and 800 control subjects, elevation of total homocysteine (tHcy) (above the 80th percentile) was found to be a risk factor for vascular disease in both women and men. In both sexes, low circulating levels of vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5-phosphate) was associated with 2- to 3-fold increased risk of vascular disease, independent of tHcy levels.
