In effort to better understand exercise behaviors, researchers of sport and exercise psychology have recently applied Leary's self-presentational theory of social anxiety to the exercise environment (Brewer, Holmes, Van Raalte, & McDevitt, 1997; Crawford & Ecklund, 1994; Hart, Leary, & Rejeski, 1989).
