PARIS -- Veteran French oceanographer and prize-winning filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau died Wednesday.

He was 87.

His widow, Francine, said he died of a heart attack at 2.30 a.m. at their Paris home while recovering from a respiratory ailment that had kept him in the hospital for months.

She said he was conscious and lucid up to his last day and had just completed a book summing up his legacy.
