PARIS -- Veteran French oceanographer and prize-winning filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau died Wednesday.
He was 87.
His widow, Francine, said he died of a heart attack at 2.30 a.m. at their Paris home while recovering from a respiratory ailment that had kept him in the hospital for months.
She said he was conscious and lucid up to his last day and had just completed a book summing up his legacy.
In his trademark sea-blue tunic and red beret, Capt. Cousteau became a familiar figure through his books and films, especially the U.S.-sponsored TV series The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, first ...
