Jim Nicholson overcame poverty through discipline and hard work -- values he now champions as chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman dim Nicholson defies the stereotype of the country-club Republican. Raised on a farm in rural Iowa, his parents did not install indoor plumbing until he was in his twenties. His father was a "chronic alcoholic" whose drinking habits, recalls Nicholson, "kept us chronically poor." His mother always told the seven Nicholson children that their poverty never could detract from their intelligence and that they should study, work and pray hard to get somewhere in this life.
