The paint was flaking and sliding off St. Benedict's precious 112-year-old icons when artist Gwen Sides was called to rescue them last year. Now, after months of careful documentation and painstaking restoration, the 14 Stations of the Cross are nearing completion.
The stations tell the story of Jesus' journey of about a mile from Pilate's court to Calvary and his crucifixion there. The icons are particularly important during Lent, when Catholics customarily attend the Stations of the Cross services.
Throughout the year, parishioner Terry Holzer brought two stations at a time to Sides' studio in Jordan for restoration and picked them up when finished. ...
