TUCSON, Ariz. _ Maybe if the Texas Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez a little earlier, they could have landed the other big fish in the 2000 free-agent pool they so hotly pursued: pitcher Mike Hampton.
"No," Hampton said. "What another player does has no bearing on my decision. I made my decision based on the factors I talked about. That's the only way to do it."
And the factors that played into Hampton's decision, as well as Denny Neagle's, were similar to A-Rod's reason to sign with Texas: A great contract and a shot at the postseason.
