SAN JOSE, Calif. _ A federal appeals court Wednesday scrapped an Oregon jury's $107 million verdict against anti-abortion groups who had been accused of using the Internet to threaten abortion providers throughout the country, applying the First Amendment's broadest protections to the inflammatory rhetoric of the abortion debate.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in a case that attracted nationwide attention for its potent mix of free-speech issues and abortion politics _ and for a lurid Web site that dripped animated blood and depicted abortion doctors in a "10 Most Wanted" list.
