NEW YORK-Braided rugs have been shaped, scented and squared, but the classic oval styles are the all-time favorite.
"Traditional oval styles are still the majority of the business," said Donald Scarlata, president and chief executive officer of Colonial Mills.
Braided rugs are one of the only true American products and date back to the Pilgrims, who hand-braided old textiles and clothing into rugs, Scarlata said.
Colonial Mills offers braided rugs machine-made of a variety of fibers, from polypropylene, retailing at $199, to wool, which retails for $399 in the 5-by-8.
"The product niche is still very viable," Scarlata said.
