The death of Sir John Gielgud in May last year, aged 96, marked the end of an era.
Gielgud was, perhaps, the foremost actor of his generation and he had worked throughout his acting life with people we have come to recognise as 'the greats', and they included Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Peggy Ashcroft and so on.
This wonderful actor, who once patted me on the head approvingly after a performance I gave as a young actor at the old Birmingham Rep (and ever after, whenever we met, referred to me with a sweet smile, as: 'dear Richard from Birmingham'), ...
