UNTIL recently, department stores were being written off as out of date in a modern retail world in which consumers had the choice of out-of-town shopping centres, catalogues, the internet or even TV channels.

They had been considered revolutionary when they first appeared at the end of the 19th century but, by the 1970s, they had a rather tired 'Are You Being Served?' image - having failed to keep pace with the arrival of high street chain stores.
