"A safe and efficient transportation system is essential to keep people and goods moving and cities and communities prospering," Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta told delegates at a general session during the Congressional City Conference.
Mineta also challenged local officials to help address problems resulting from the rapid growth in commercial aviation, as airports are an integral part of local economies.
Reflecting on his tenure as mayor of San Jose in the early 1970s, the secretary named transportation as the tool that had the greatest impact on the city's economic development and quality of life.
