Ministers agreed to work with a British, French and Italian initiative to establish a network of EU immigration liaison officers in the Balkans and surrounding areas. Under this plan, the liaison officers, whose job it is to work with local police, customs and immigration authorities, would also share information and co-ordinate their activities with one another (see European Report No 2575). An EU statement said this network would target the "criminal syndicates" organising illegal migration. Another initiative agreed was the offer to send teams of EU immigration officials to work with counterparts in Bosnia and Croatia, in order to help improve their working methods. ...
