In World Patent WO 99/27166, Conoco Inc discloses a process for making fine-count filaments of pitch-based carbon by blow-spinning a melt.
According to the company from Ponca City, Oklahoma, USA, this results in better uniformity of the product as well as offering economic advantages. Blow-spinning of carbonaceous pitch involves extruding the molten material through fine capillaries and then attenuating it using a medium, usually gas, which stretches the fibres and reduces their diameter.
Normally blow-spinning produces fibres that are less than 50 mm (two inches) long, compared with melt-spun fibres that can be extruded as continuous filaments. ...
