FAIRBANKS, Alaska _ From the road, it looks like an iron monster surrounded by a giant pile of rocks. But this monster once lived. Over a period of 30 years, it floated nearly five miles down a man-made stream as it clawed through the earth. The payoff was 7.5 million ounces of gold.

Gold Dredge No.8 is a historic landmark _ complete with a plaque. Though not especially pretty, it attracts thousands of visitors a year who come to tour an antiquated 1,000-ton strip-mining machine and learn about life in a factory in the wilderness. They troop through restored bunkhouses, browse gift shops and pan for gold.
