Mar. 30--The Alaska Board of Fisheries is opposed to assigning individual fishing quotas to halibut charter boats, Chairman Dan Coffey said Thursday.
"There's a whole host of questions that need to be answered before we take any regulatory action," he said.
The federal panel that regulates offshore fishing in Alaska, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, is scheduled to vote in mid-April on whether to give catch rights to 1,100 Southeast and Southcentral charter boats.
The individual shares could be bought and sold and could be highly valuable.
