When longtime author Paula Danziger speaks to school assemblies, someone invariably asks, "How did you start writing?"
"I was born," she tells the audience, then asks, "How many of you were born?"
Up go the kids' hands. But, as Danziger recounts with a throaty chuckle, "Only half the teachers raise their hands, which makes me wonder."
Danziger, one of the most popular and enduring writers for kids, can't help making with the wisecracks. She grew up watching comics Ernie Kovacs and Sid Caesar in the golden age of TV.
