TRENTON, N.J. _ With the use of a concealed digital camera and radar gun on the New Jersey Turnpike, researchers will soon attempt to measure an elusive element in the debate on racial profiling: the speed of drivers, broken down by race and ethnicity.
By reviewing thousands of images captured at 14 locations along the 148-mile highway, researchers will try to determine what percentage of white, black, Latino and "other" drivers exceed the speed limit _ and by how much. The theory is that state police should be pulling over motorists of those groups at roughly the same rate that they are breaking the law.
