About half the voters who turn out for today's local elections in DuPage County will be trying a new system that soon signals an end to punch-card ballots.

Rather than using a pointy stylus to poke out tiny paper chads from punch cards, voters will be equipped with black markers to fill in ovals to the left of the name of their preferred candidates.

Roughly 358 precincts - or half the precincts in the county - will be operating under the new system.

"We want to be in the position to fully implement it by March of 2002," said Robert Saar, director of the DuPage County Board of Elections.
