CHICAGO -- On the day he was installed as archbishop of Chicago, Aug. 25, 1982, Joseph Bernardin entered Holy Name Cathedral to the sound of cymbals, drums, horns, choirs and a ringing applause from a congregation of 1,500 people.
But, 14 years later, it was quiet Monday as Cardinal Bernardin entered the cathedral for the last time, and mourners received his body to begin a three-day funeral rite.
Cardinal Bernardin, archbishop of Cincinnati for 10 years until he was appointed to lead the nation's second largest archdiocese, died Thursday of pancreatic cancer.
