The Cincinnati Ballet launched its 1996-97 season Friday night at the Aronoff Center for the Arts with an impressive and glittering production of George Balanchine's closely guarded masterpiece ''Jewels.''
Thanks to artistic director Peter Anastos' connections with the Balanchine Trust, the Cincinnati Ballet is only the third company in the world to be given the rights to this work. The others are the late choreographer's New York City Ballet and the Miami City Ballet.
''Jewels'' is a plotless ballet divided into three acts: ''Emeralds,'' ''Rubies'' and ''Diamonds.''
