Two exhibitions opening today at the Arts Consortium of Cincinnati dramatically recall the rise of African-American churches here and in Eastern American cities during the 18th and 19th centuries.
''Climbing Jacob's Ladder: the Rise of Black Churches in Eastern Cities, 1740-1877'' is a traveling exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C.
The show highlights major events in the development of black churches beginning with worship among slaves on plantations to independent black congregations of the 19th century.
