Joining worldwide observances of the centennial of his death, the 1997 May Festival will open with Brahms' German Requiem May 23 at Music Hall.
Guest conductor Robert Shaw will be on the podium for the all-Brahms concert, which also will include his ''Tragic'' Overture and Alto Rhapsody with mezzo-soprano Florence Quivar.
Other works scheduled for the '97 event are the Mozart Requiem, Prokofiev's cantata ''Alexander Nevsky'' and an opera night featuring excerpts from Mussorgsky's ''Boris Godunov'' and Puccini's ''Turandot.''
