Mary Ellen Bohart will celebrate her 18th birthday Thursday, the same day her son, Gary Bohart, observes his 12th birthday.
Quick subtraction makes you gulp, until you realize Thursday is Feb. 29 - Leap Day.
Once every four years - to synchronize the calendar year with the astronomical year - an extra day is tacked onto February.
For many people, Leap Day is only a novelty or a minor inconvenience to remember that the day after Feb. 28 is not March 1.
But it has other implications that often go unnoticed:
