The first days of winter are shaping up to be a mild breeze.
But what happens next depends on the twists and turns of the jet stream, the current of high altitude winds that brought unseasonably chilly days in November before shifting north to produce near record warm days in December.
''It is interesting that it has shifted,'' said Jeffrey Rogers, a professor of geology at Ohio State University and the Ohio state climatologist. ''I was fearful that we would have a bad winter.''
