Precisely placed explosive charges toppled a 280-foot brick and steel smokestack at a CG&E power plant next to the Ohio River about 3:30 a.m. today.
The stack at CG&E's Walter C. Beckjord Generating Station in New Richmond, 20 miles southeast of Cincinnati, was damaged Sunday when cold weather caused a 50-foot-long crack - a foot wide in some places - in the 42-year-old smokestack.
''It went just perfectly. The stack lifted, made a slight turn and came down right into the river,'' said Steve Brash, a spokesman for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co.
