There is no getting out now. There seems to be no exit from this baseball pennant race. You think you're out, and then, like Michael Corleone of ''The Godfather,'' they drag you back in. This pennant race is harder to escape than Leavenworth.
Look at the Reds. They keep trying to get out of this pennant race, using the old-fashioned method of losing lots of games. But losing is not enough anymore. The Reds lost a bunch this season, but then over the weekend, the Reds won three games in 24 hours, everybody else in the world lost, and now they are within 3 1/2 games of first place. The race is on again, at least until Wednesday.
