We heard on television on Aug. 24, 1991, that Ukraine had seized the opportunity during the tumult of the coup to declare its independence from the crumbling Soviet Union. Suddenly, everyone in the room realized that they now were Ukrainian citizens. Those of Ukrainian ethnicity cheered and popped champagne corks. Those of Russian ethnicity sat silent.
Five years later, many issues regarding independence, democracy and free enterprise remain as unclear as they were that first day in free Ukraine's history.
