CHICAGO -- Cardinal Joseph Bernardin is trying to reassure skeptics, including fellow church leaders, that holding a series of conferences to discuss issues dividing Roman Catholics will be worth the effort.
Cardinal Bernardin, in a 10-page statement Thursday, acknowledged fears that his proposal - called the Catholic Common Ground Project - could be viewed as an attempt to erode church teachings or circumvent indisputable doctrine.
He insists it is worth the risk.
