HARBOR SPRINGS, MICH. -- You can't treat asthma successfully without accurately assessing its severity, Dr. Autumn Clos said at the scientific assembly of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.
Referring to the guidelines set forth in the National Institutes of Health's 1997 "Expert Panel Report 2: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma," Dr. Clos emphasized the importance of classifying severity in every patient based on symptoms and lung function before treatment. The four categories are mild intermittent, mild persistent, moderate persistent, and severe persistent asthma.
