The Information Commissioner, Elizabeth France, has waded in to the row over the Postal Preference Service by saying she "doesn't mind" how consumers are offered the chance to suppress unsolicited direct mail.

Her comments effectively scupper any claims by the Mailing Preference Service to have a unique role in meeting the requirement for opting out, contained in the Data Protection Act 1998.

France was speaking as a keynote speaker on the first day of the International Direct Marketing Fair at Excel, London. She drew a clear distinction between what the law demands and any products created to execute it.
