Last season, St. Xavier High School catcher Jason Basil became the first sophomore in the history of the talent-laden Greater Catholic League South Division to be named player of the year.
Not even Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Larkin or Tim Naehring accomplished that, and all three major-league players performed as sophomores in the GCL South.
This season, Baseball America magazine, with the help of college coaches and professional scouts, has selected Basil as the best player in Ohio.
