Once upon a time in America, there was one heavyweight champion. The two best teams played in the World Series. The No. 1 song was the No. 1 song, there were no alternative or contemporary music charts cluttering American Bandstand. Things apparently were too simple.
So, somebody invented the International Boxing Federation and wildcard playoff teams.
Monday, the last of the era faded away. Indiana killed the one-class high school playoffs, one of the last systems in America which threw all high school teams into one pool and let them play it out for state championships. Now, the schools will be divided into four classes ...
