Corixa Corp. has decoded the genome of an acne-causing bacterium, the first step in creating a vaccine that could ultimately treat and possibly prevent acne, the company said yesterday.
But the Seattle biotechnology company and medical experts stressed that Corixa still has a long way to go before an acne vaccine could become a reality.
It will take at least 12 to 18 months to develop the vaccine and begin clinical trials, said Steven Gillis, chairman and chief executive officer, and a genomic-based acne treatment is still four to five years away.
