National Garden Week begins Sunday and each year the National Garden Bureau, a non-profit informational organization supported by donations from seed companies, celebrates by naming a flowering plant and a culinary plant of the year.
This is the Year of the Centaurea - cornflowers, bachelor's buttons, basket-flower or old-fashioned blue-bottle. (See story below.) And it also is the Year of Basil, the fragrant herb with more than 30 species.
Basil is both a beautiful ornamental and a source of flavor for a host of dishes. It is part of the cuisines of Asia, India, Europe, Africa and our own country.
