James Russell Wiggins, who died at his home in Brooklin, Maine, on November 19, 2000, just two weeks before his 97th birthday, was a journalistic renaissance man and a godfather of the National Conference of Editorial Writers.

NCEW members probably remember him best as the longtime editor of The Washington Post who, upon his retirement in 1968, served briefly as President Johnson's ambassador to the United Nations.

Others may have known of him as the 32-year editor and former publisher of a distinguished Maine country weekly, The Ellsworth American.
