Just hours before he died, Verlin Wene was careful to steer clear of the very thing that would later kill him - a driver chatting on his cell phone.
As he and his family headed to a graduation party in northern Wisconsin last May, the 40-year-old West Allis man managed to avoid a driver who, phone pressed tightly to his ear, swerved, slowed down and sped up as he traveled down the road.
But Wene couldn't avoid the vehicle that would come barreling across the centerline later that day.
