Just hours before he died, Verlin Wene was careful to steer clear of the very thing that would later kill him - a driver chatting on his cell phone.

As he and his family headed to a graduation party in northern Wisconsin last May, the 40-year-old West Allis man managed to avoid a driver who, phone pressed tightly to his ear, swerved, slowed down and sped up as he traveled down the road.
