The Brazilian niobium and ferroniobium producer, Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineracao (CBMM), has completed a major US$78 million expansion at its mine at Araxa in Minas Gerais, raising capacity from 50,000 t to 84,000 t/y of niobium concentrates. According to the company, which is owned 55.18% by Brazil's Moreira Salles family and 44.82% by Molycorp of the US, the expansion is designed to preserve world supply and ensure price stability for the next ten years.
In addition to increased niobium concentrate capacity, CBMM has raised its ferroniobium production capacity by 50% to 45,000 t/y. The company's sales co-ordinator, Jose Isildo de Vargas, says that ...
