High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, alpacas and llamas grazing on the sparse stiff grasses may well wonder at the occasional groups of people who slowly climb the steep trails. These climbers don't resemble the tanned and sure-footed Indians who make the highlands their home. For one thing, they don't speak Quecha. Instead, mixtures of English, French, Czech, Polish, Spanish, and other languages drift down the mountainside to the animals, who halt their chewing to listen. There is little talk to hear. It is difficult to breathe in the thin atmosphere of these high mountains. It is even harder to talk.
