The picturesque town of Manteo is a modern-day Mayberry.
Its brick sidewalks, tree-lined streets, quaint shops and even a town barber are reminiscent of the fictional town made popular on the 1960s TV program, ``The Andy Griffith Show.''
But it is the pluck of the locals and not the luck of the land that has molded Manteo.
When bridges connected the islands of the Outer Banks to the mainland in the 1950s, interest shifted to the beaches. Manteo, which had been the hub of mercantile activity, was forgotten. Vacationers wanted sand and surf. Consequently, many businesses inManteo closed. The ...
