Apr. 10--They could be the wave of the future, if only New York state knew what to make of them.
Grassland Equipment & Irrigation Corp., a Latham-based distributor of commercial lawn mowers and landscaping equipment, wants to sell a California company's battery-powered bicycles.
But while Grassland's owners and the bike manufacturer say the product is little different from a mountain bike in speed and safety, the state Department of Motor Vehicles does not see it that way.
